HLINSKO (10,500 inhabitants, 582 m above sea level, River Chrudimka)

Translated from Czech version

The city of Hlinsko situated in the Bohemian-Moravian highlands on the border of the Iron Mountains protected countryside area and Žďárské vrchy is the natural administrative, industrial and social centre of the Hlinsko Region. The number 34 first-class-road runs through the city, as does the railway line from Pardubice to Havlíčkův Brod. The first inhabitants settled in the slightly elevated area over the River Chrudimka as far back as the 12th century, historically documented by a written report dating back to 1349. Until the 19th century, Hlinsko shared the fortunes of the lords of Pardubice and Rychmburk. This connection with the lords of Pardubice is commemorated in the town coat-of-arms, half of a white stepping horse with a blue bridle on a red background. The main livelihood of the inhabitants here was agriculture, pottery and cottage weaving. Hlinsko gained city status in 1834. An important dividing line in the history of the city came in 1871 with the construction of the railway from Pardubice to Havlíčkův Brod, which transformed the agricultural and handicraft town into an industrial city. It was mainly the textile and fur industries, which made a huge entry here and experienced a great boom. Both soon gained renown and an important position on the European and overseas markets. The stone industry also developed successfully along with machine building, brewing and the dairy industry.

Some of the most important architectural monuments in the city are the Baroque City Hall that dates back to 1788, renovated to its present form in the middle of the 19th century, the Baroque Church of the Birth of Our Lady that dates back to 1730 ? 45 with a rare font dating back to 1628, ?Ježík?s House? no. 45 that dates back to 1904 and is decorated with sgraffito depicting Jiří z Poděbrad and the victory of the Hlinsko people over the Swedes as well as the complex of the early Baroque Church of St. Peter and Paul from the end of the 17th century, the wooden bell tower dating back to 1804 and cross with folk relief work from 1835 in the local district of Chlum. The most important collection of historical buildings in Hlinsko is to be found in the Betlém monument reservation for folk architecture, which documents the method of housing and lifestyle of the inhabitants here from the 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century. The city leads an active cultural life throughout the year. The city museum and gallery offer lovers of fine art the ?Creative Hlinsko? event every year, which represents work by leading Czech artists of the past and present. It thus links on from a rich cultural history as the museum in Hlinsko was one of the first in Czech lands and this region was home to outstanding artists (F. Kaván, G Macoun, A. Slavíček, F. Šmídra and K. Lidický). In the summer, Betlém comes to life with the traditional ?Adámek?s folklore festival?. Many concerts take place over the course of the year as well as plays, exhibitions and other social events.

The city is also famous for its industry. ETA electrical appliances, Rychtář beer, Tatra dairy products, luxury fur coats and leather clothes as well as products made by the local furniture companies have a permanent place on the market and are firmly associated with the name Hlinsko. The city of Hlinsko is twinned with Púchov in Slovakia, the Dutch Wognum and the Italian Civitella D?Agliano.

Thanks to its location and favourable conditions, Hlinsko is the ideal place for winter and summer recreation. Foreign and domestic tourists are served by several accommodation and catering facilities. Two slopes with artificial snow and evening skiing are much sought-after by fans of downhill skiing and there are treated cross-country runs near the city. In the event of adverse weather, visitors can use the services of the indoor swimming pool with sauna, solarium and fitness centre as well as a squash court. Sporting activities are also offered by the Olšinky Sports Centre where there is an indoor winter stadium covered with an in-line surface in summer, tennis courts, a volleyball court, multi-purpose playing field with artificial surface and a football stadium.

An international cycle path runs through the city as well as local cycle paths and tourist trails.
